Robert Joseph “Bob” Dole, born July 22, 1923, in Russell, Kansas, is a lawyer and retired U.S. Senator from Kansas from 1969–1996. Part of that time Dole served as U.S. Senate Majority Leader, setting a record as the longest-serving Republican leader. In the 1996 U.s. Presidential election, he was the Republican nominee, but lost to Bill Clinton.

In 2007, President George W. Bush appointed Dole as a co-chairperson of the commission to investigate problems at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He is member and former U.S. Senator Elizabeth Hanford Dole of North Carolina.

Trivia on Bob Dole as a Lefty: Bob Dole is originally a right-hander. He had to switch to left-hand after he lost the use of his right arm in a serious injury suffered during World War II.  He went 0n to become a successful United States senator,  Senate majority leader, and a U.S. presidential candidate.
